Daniel Webster was born in Salisbury, New Hampshire. He received little early schooling but graduated from Dartmouth College in 1801. Webster studied law in Salisbury and then became a lawyer in Boston in 1805. In 1807 he returned to New Hampshire. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1813 to 1817 and from 1823 to 1827. He served in the U.S. Senate from 1827 to 1841 and as secretary of state under President William Henry Harrison. In 1842 Webster negotiated the Webster-Ashburton Treaty, which established the present-day border between the northeastern United States and Canada. He returned to the U.S. Senate in 1845. Webster opposed the war with Mexico and the annexation of Texas. From 1850 until his death in 1852, he served as secretary of state under President Millard Fillmore.
